Facebook to stream Olympics in Latin America

Social media platform Facebook has acquired the rights to show the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Latin America through a deal with Marco Claro, the digital media venture between the Spanish media group Marca and the Latin American arm of telecommunications company América Móvil.

Facebook will stream at least four hours of coverage per day from the ongoing PyeongChang 2018 Games in South Korea via Facebook Live.

The closing ceremony from PyeongChang 2018 will also be shown on Facebook Live.

The agreement includes an on-demand package of highlights, including footage from the opening ceremony, as well as Instagram access, with highlights to be made available on Marca Claro’s news feed on the social media network.

The deal covers Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

América Móvil’s Latin American channel Claro Sports, and Marca are both broadcasting 600 hours of live content in 17 countries in Latin America until 25th February via the Claro Sports channels and the ‘Marca Claro 360’ app.

América Móvil acquired the rights in December to the next four editions of the Olympic Games. The company’s partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gives it digital and pay-TV rights to PyeongChang 2018 and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, as well as the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and Paris in 2024.
