Fox teams up with Twitter and Snapchat for Fifa World Cup

US broadcaster Fox Sports has announced that it will partner with social media companies Twitter and Snap Inc to provide coverage of the 2018 Fifa World Cup in the country.

Under the terms of the deal, Fox will produce a live show of the quadrennial international soccer tournament, which will be streamed from Moscow’s Red Square in Russia on to Twitter’s online site on each matchday, and provide previews, recaps and near real-time video highlights for each game.

Fox will also provide content for use by Snap Inc on its instant messaging and multimedia mobile app Snapchat, where it will show ‘stories’ containing matchday video highlights of the World Cup featuring goals and key moments.

In addition, Fox is to produce magazine-like editions of content for Snapchat’s mobile-first audience, called Publisher Stories, which will record daily highlights of the soccer event through recaps, previews and features produced specifically for Snap.

The agreement is the latest in a range of live content partnerships held by Twitter, which include the likes of golf’s PGA Tour and Fox Sports Asia. It signed a multi-year deal in May with the National Football League (NFL) to live-stream pre-game coverage as well as to air a 30-minute live digital show covering game highlights, breaking news and key storylines. The social media platform paid US$10 million for the rights to broadcast ten of the NFL’s Thursday Night Football games in 2016, but was replaced by media giant Amazon, which is believed to have paid US$50 million for the same ten-game deal in April 2017.

Meanwhile, Snap has partnered with Discovery Communications’ Eurosport in a deal which will see the social media company feature content from the 2018 Winter Olympic Games as part of Snapchat’s ‘stories’ feature.

The 2018 Fifa World Cup is due to kick off in Russia on 14th June and ends on 15th July.
