Overwatch League, the city-based esports competition, has confirmed that its grand finals will be held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 29th September this year.
The Overwatch League Grand Finals will determine the league champion after a 12-team play-off which will result in the top two teams going head-to-head.
These teams will compete for the US$1.7 million prize pool with the winning team receiving US$1.1 million and the runner-up taking home US$600,000.
The Wells Fargo Center is home to National Hockey League (NHL) franchise Philadelphia Flyers and National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise Philadelphia 76ers and welcomes over 2.6 million fans each year.
The Overwatch League finals will air ABC’s linear channel in the US, as well as being streamed live on Twitch in 190 countries, with the ESPN app also showing coverage.
“Philadelphia is a legendary sports town with amazing fans and the Wells Fargo Center is the perfect venue to crown our next champion,” said Nate Nanzer, Overwatch League commissioner. “The 2018 Grand Finals in Brooklyn was epic but we’re looking to up the ante for our season finale in Philly.”
Dave Scott, chairman and chief executive of Comcast Spectator – the owners of the Wells Fargo Center – added: “We can’t wait to bring this electric event to Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.
“Overwatch League fans will be some of the first guests to enjoy the arena’s new advancements and we look forward to hosting an international audience for premier programming.”
These new advancements are part of a US$250 million renovation which include an overhaul of the main concourse, new lower bowl seating and installing a kinetic 4K entertainment system.
London Spitfire will be looking to retain their title after winning the inaugural Overwatch League championship last year.
