Top-flight German soccer side Schalke 04 have announced the launch of a new location-based augmented reality (AR) app.
The platform, which was developed by Berlin-based startup Forward Gaming, will enable fans of the Bundesliga outfit all over the world to compete with each other to unlock club-related rewards and prizes.
Upon opening the mobile gaming app, users will be confronted with virtual boxes containing questions about Schalke and the club’s history. Fans who provide a correct answer will then receive rewards such as rare trading cards.
Users will be able to exchange their trading cards with other members, while they can also challenge fellow supporters to a ‘duel’ in order to test their Schalke knowledge against other fans.
The app, which is available on both iOS and Android devices, is Schalke’s latest attempt to engage with their fans through digital. The club are one of the more prominent European soccer sides in esports having integrated a competitive gaming division into their business in 2016.
"Consumer behaviour in our digital society is changing,” said Schalke’s marketing director Alexander Jobst. “To reflect this, together with Forward Gaming we have developed a great offer for our fans. Schalke Quest is an excellent example of how tradition and innovation are strongest when they complement each other.”
On the pitch, Schalke crashed out of the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday following their humiliating 10-2 aggregate defeat to English champions Manchester City. They return to domestic action at home to RB Leipzig on Saturday.
