The esports arm of Spanish top-flight soccer club Valencia has secured a main sponsorship deal with Powergym Nutrition.
The deal, which was announced alongside a renewal of the division’s management arrangement with World Esports Corporation (WEC), sees the sports nutrition company become the first esports specific sponsor affiliated with a La Liga club.
The contract provides Powergym branding on players’ shirts for the 2019/20 season, with these made available to buy on the club’s official website and at their megastore. In addition, it will lend its name to the esports team, which will now be known as Valencia CF eSports Powergym.
The news was one of several announcements from the team, including unveiling players to compete in Fortnite, FIFA 20, for which it will also have a Pro Club Team, and Teamfight Tactics, with developer Riot Games set to reveal a series of tournaments as it moves to make it a professional esport.
In addition, the team revealed they would organise a FIFA tournament in association with Sony PlayStation as Valencia, the first La Liga club with an esports team, continues to establish itself as a major player in competitive gaming. The club’s director of marketing, Jorge Garcia, has already insisted on the need for the esports team to reach a younger audience, with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reporting he considers it a ‘key’ for Valencia’s commercial development.
Jose Manuel Pérez, chief executive of Powergym Nutrition, said: “Sports nutrition is something that will gradually be introduced and cover specific needs in esports, so we want to be at the forefront with the support of prestigious centennial club, Valencia CF, which has been demonstrating its capacity in this sector for several years.”
